Medical Payments

Accept HSA & FSA cards

Enable your Stripe account to accept Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Account cards for medical-related expenses.

HSA Cards

Health Savings Account

Cardholders must be enrolled in an eligible high-deductible health plan (HDHP). Funds roll over year to year.

FSA Cards

Flexible Spending Account

No insurance enrollment required, but balances typically must be used within the plan year (use-it-or-lose-it).

Stripe configuration required

HSA/FSA cards require a specific Merchant Category Code (MCC) so card networks can verify your products/services relate to medical needs. Contact Stripe support before accepting these cards.

HSA & FSA questions

Does Stripe accept HSA cards?
Yes. With an eligible healthcare MCC configured on your account, Stripe processes HSA and FSA debit cards like standard Visa or Mastercard payments, in person or with manual entry.
How do I accept HSA payments?
Ask Stripe support to set your account's Merchant Category Code to an eligible healthcare MCC, then charge HSA and FSA cards in the app like any other card. No extra hardware is needed.
What MCC code do I need for HSA and FSA cards?
An eligible healthcare MCC, such as 8099 (medical services), 8011 (physicians), or 8021 (dentists). Stripe support sets it on your account. Card networks use the MCC to approve HSA and FSA transactions.
Do I need an IIAS inventory system?
Most healthcare providers don't. IIAS applies to retailers like pharmacies that sell a mix of eligible and non-eligible items. If you sell qualified medical services, the right MCC is enough.
